USGS Helps Forecast, Monitor, and Assess Impacts of Land and Climate Change
The critical lands, habitats, and wildlife of the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed are being impacted by the effects of land and climate change. The growing number of people and the way we use the land greatly influence the current health of the ecosystem and its future condition. Human population growth has resulted in a loss of habitats and critical lands, poor water quality, and over harvesting of fisheries. Sea-level rise has impacted coastal towns and resulted in loss of tidal wetlands that are important for waterfowl. Future impacts of land and climate change could change stream and forest conditions and impact fish, wildlife, and their recreational value. The Chesapeake Bay Program is focused on maintaining healthy watersheds, and the President’s Executive Order Strategy provides new goals to conserve lands and respond to climate change.
The USGS, working with NOAA and other partners, is providing science to identify and monitor vulnerable lands and assess the risks posed by continued population growth and potential future impacts of climate change. USGS activities include:
- Model land-use change
- Monitor and map land changes
- Evaluate potential impacts of land and climate change
- Science for land conservation.
